Upfront & Personal

Happy New Year to you all. I know that may seem a strange sentiment to be expressed in an August newsletter, but for many of us the end of August/beginning of September marks the start of the school year - a family new year of sorts. It is a time when we plan for change, create hopes and make commitments for the coming months. This newsletter is designed to help you successfully transition from the fun of summer to the schedules of fall.
I hope you've been having a wonderful summer. I've had a terrific time and created lots of space for family and friends. Hence, you've not received a newsletter during the summer months. I've definitely made my self-care a priority in July and August. I've worked less and played more. (If you want to know how to do this-- I give away my secrets in the upcoming 90 Days to a Balanced Life program.)
As Briefcase Moms® continues to evolve, I find the information I wish to share with you transforming too. This newsletter will now be sent out at variable intervals (which means when I have something valuable to say I'll send you a newsletter :)). The newsletter will feature brief work-life balance and career success topics. Specific sections will include: Upfront & Personal; Book Tips (Briefcase Moms excerpts and book reviews); Feature Article/Question; News You Can Use (articles/reports/surveys); Announcements/Offers; Appearing Now. Some or all of these sections will be covered in each newsletter. I hope you find this new format enjoyable and enlightening.
Wishing you much success and balance, L.

Feature Question: How Can I Deal With it All?
(Some of the most popular questions I'm asked by clients and workshop/keynote attendees appear here. If you've got a question email me.)
Q: I am feeling overwhelmed. I have a to-do list a mile long, an in-tray that's about to collapse, closets that are jam-packed with junk and a stack of family photos...and now I'm getting anxious about school starting. Things are just going to get worse. How can I deal with it all?
A: Often when we look at all there is to do, it can seem and is overwhelming. But if we chunk it down into smaller tasks the world starts to look a lot brighter. Try this 4S strategy.
Sort it. First review the four areas you want to tackle and determine the following: 1) tasks you enjoy and only you can do such as attend to personal appointments; 2) the things you don't like doing and can transfer to someone else; and, 3) those items you've been meaning to do.
Start it. Stop procrastinating. Start doing what you find fun and only you can do...now. Don't undertake everything at once or set unrealistic deadlines. Just do one small task to build momentum. Baby steps will turn into giant leaps. Remember make it fun. You'll have a good time and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Share it. The items you designated as "don't like to do" are the ones you should delegate. If you really don't want to do these things then it's time to find someone else to do them. There will always be something else you prefer to do. So, those items that you are the least enthused about will continue to be a source of frustration and an energy drain for you. Find family members who can help out or hire someone to do the job.
Stuff it. If there are tasks that continue to show up on your to-do list year in and year out, it may be time to drop them. All the magazines you've been planning to read, get rid of them. That fancy photo album/baby book you've imagined with stencils, calligraphy and witty comments might need to be replaced with a simpler version. Old baby clothes and toys, could be passed on to others. Make some choices and give yourself permission to let go. You'll feel great and get rid of clutter at the same time.

News You Can Use
"Blame Misplaced in Work-Life Imbalance" - reported Aug 18 in Business Edge News Magazine
Chris Higgins believes he has finally drilled down to the root cause of a growing imbalance between work and family.
"We have found the enemy and it is us," he says.
In 2001, the professor at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario co-authored what is regarded as the definitive study on work-life balance for Health Canada with Linda Duxbury, a professor at the Eric Sprott School of Business at Ottawa's Carleton University. Share the Family Database - excerpted from Briefcase Moms: 10 Proven Practices to Balance Working Mothers' Lives
If you are the keeper, intentionally or not, of the details of your family's life, make an effort to decentralize this information. Instead of holding shoe sizes, celebration dates and babysitters' numbers in your head, share this data with your partner and children. This could take the form a verbal exchange, listings in your family calendar, or perhaps a "family resource" file located in your home office.
